While driving toward Cortland, New York, a trucker named Adam noticed something by the side of the road that made him pull over right away. Two dogs had been left behind, and Adam knew they needed help.

He stayed with them and called the local authorities. Thanks to his quick thinking, both dogs were soon on their way to safety. One of them was in good shape and only needed a check-up. The other, an older dog, needed veterinary care and surgery — but he came through it well and is recovering with the help of a wonderful team at the Broome County Humane Society.

“These animals have been through a lot,” said Amberly Ondria, a shelter manager at the Broome County Humane Society. The shelter team has been working hard to make sure both dogs get everything they need.

The dogs were later given names that honor the people who showed up for them: Trooper, after the first responders, and Adam, after the trucker who refused to drive past.

Trooper, believed to be between 6 and 8 years old, is already adjusting beautifully. He’s getting around well and has a clear spark in him.

“Although a bit unsteady, and only moving a short distance, it is very obvious that he is determined,” the Humane Society shared on Facebook.

The other dog, Adam, is thought to be around a year old and is doing great too.

The shelter has been overwhelmed by the kindness of the community. “Thank you to EVERYONE for your prayers, kind words, generous donations and sharing this story!” the Humane Society wrote. “It is because of all of you that we can get Trooper and Adam the level and quality of care that they need and deserve. Words cannot describe how tremendous people are and how everyone is rallying for these dogs!”

And here’s the best part of the story: Adam the trucker has said he wants to adopt both dogs himself.

“He has already proven he has a big heart and these pups would have an amazing life with him,” the shelter posted. “Please let that happen too.”

  3. I hope the authorities will be able to find the culprits and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the Law! I cannot fathom the cruelty and abuse people dish out upon innocent animals AND think it’s okay!May karma bite them over and over again!

  4. “DOGS” – the “BEST SPECIES” on “PLANET EARTH”, any dog “ABUSER”, should be hunted down and “BEAT TO AN INCH OF THEIR “SICK” LIVES.

  5. lf this person treats animals this way, think how he treats people. These poor dogs probably belonged to someone else (girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse/offspring) and this demented person wanted them gone from his/her life.
