Emily Jokinen left her bedroom to grab a pacifier for her one-month-old daughter. When she opened her bedroom door, she was shocked to find a stray dog sitting on their stairs.
The dog was visibly shaken up, freezing and wet, and malnourished. She was also walking with a limp and in dire need of medical care.

Confused as to how this dog got into their house, Jokinen and her husband, Jack, checked their home security footage and discovered that their front door didn’t latch correctly last night, which allowed the wind to push it open.
The stray dog wound up wandering in, and was inside for good after a neighbor wound up shutting their door for them about 15 minutes later.

Instead of calling animal control or bringing the dog to a shelter, the Jokinen’s named her Suzy and brought her to the vet. Best of all? They decided to permanently adopt her!
“We didn’t expect it but of all the bad things that could happen when your front door is left open — to end up with a sweet dog who just needs a good home,” Jokinen said. “I mean wow this could have gone a lot worse.”

Despite her older age and plethora of issues, including fleas, ticks and a heart murmur, the couple intends to give her a “dignified life and a happy home for the remainder of her years.”
Suzy is already so loved and spoiled and is enjoying her time snuggling up in her warm bed, a far cry from her days wandering the freezing streets.

“I hate when people say ‘Everything happens for a reason,’ but I really do feel like this happened for a reason,” Emily wrote on Instagram.
The couple even made Suzy an Instagram page, where you can follow all of her adventures with her new family.
