Two years ago, a pregnant German Shepherd was found in the forests of Washington state. Jim Branson, founder of Useless Bay Sanctuary, took in the missing dog. The next day, she gave birth to a puppy, which was called Tino.
As Tino grew up, he began to follow other search dogs in training classes, and soon Branson realized that he had a hidden talent.
Branson adopted Tino, and after 16 months of training, he became a member of the Three Retrievers Lost Pet Rescue.
Then, when Branson received a phone call about a deaf dog, who had disappeared, he knew the perfect dog for work. The dog owner had gone for a horseback ride in the woods and the loyal dog, name Puppy, decided to keep her company. However, on the way back they parted ways.
Some volunteers searched for the lost dog in the woods, but no luck. Alone in the darkness, Puppy could not even hear his saviors.
Tino and Branson stepped in
After 45 minutes, Tino led Branson to a mud pit, and he kept barking.
“When we first saw the Puppy, it was difficult to understand what we were seeing, because two-thirds of him was submerged in the mud,” Branson said. “Tino barked at this strange swamp monster for a bit until he realized it was a dog.”
It was soon clear that this would be a difficult rescue. “I put Tino’s leash under Puppy and tried to haul him out,” Branson explained. “He was stuck so firmly that I didn’t want to pull harder for fear of hurting his legs.”
After being submerged in the mud for more than a day, Puppy had difficulty standing up. Despite the fright, Puppy’s owners were very happy to have him back and grateful for Tino’s insightful nose.
Tino loves to go out and help animals return to their homes. Of course, his father couldn’t be more proud.
