THIS touching story of a dog who snuck out of her kennel to comfort crying foster puppies at an animal shelter will make your heart melt.

Maggie, who had recently been adopted by the Barkers Pet Motel in Saint Albert, Canada, sadly had her litter taken away from her two weeks ago.

But when she heard the crying of two puppies in a nearby kennel, her maternal instincts kicked in straight away.

The shelter, which cares for abandoned animals, had taken in the nine-week-old pups that night.

According to the motel’s Facebook page, once out of her cage, Maggie curled up against the kennel where the frightened puppies, named Hannah and Kari, were crying.

The owners shared pictures of the adorable moment online.

“We see a lot of adorable things here at Barkers but this story takes the cake …” they wrote. “Last night our newest foster puppies arrived from Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society — AARCS. Also staying with us right now is a dog who was recently adopted from the Humane Society, who had her own puppies taken away about two weeks ago.

“Last night the mama dog (Maggie) must have heard the babies crying and let herself out of her kennel to lay next to their room. We put them together for a while and all three of them were so happy!!!”

Pet motel owner Sandra Aldred had gone to dinner with her family when she checked on the live feed of the facility’s surveillance cameras and saw Maggie, an Australian shepherd cross, had escaped from her kennel.

“We watched her on the cameras and she went straight around and she found their room. She paid them a lot of attention and you could see her little tail wagging,” Ms Aldred told us.

“It was really sweet. She just had to be with those puppies. The puppies needed her and she needed them. It was pretty perfect.”

The owners said they let the three of them stay together overnight and found them still snuggling the next morning.

Maggie was picked up by her new adoptive family later that day, and Ms Aldred says she expects to find new homes for both puppies in the next week.
