When the staff of Douglas County Animal Care & Services showed up to work one morning at their Nevada rescue, they saw a matted animal on the doorstep. The pet was dropped off overnight, and the entire thing was caught on their surveillance footage. They assumed the badly matted pet was a dog, but they were very wrong.
An unidentified man was seen leaving the animal at the door in a crate and walking away from it for good.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office posted to Facebook asking for assistance in identifying this person:

The staff assumed the animal to be a dog as a lot of neglected dogs end up looking that way. But they couldn’t be sure until they cut the fur off.

They couldn’t even turn the animal around to see its face because of all the fur and the way it was placed in the carrier.

So they took the top of the carrier off and removed the animal, and when they saw its face, they were stunned. They’d never seen a cat look like this before.

The poor thing couldn’t move and was a prisoner in its own fur.

Workers shaved 4.5 pounds of fur from the cat’s body, and he was finally looking like a cat again. The matted mess of fur filled a full-size kitchen trash bag!

With the fur removed, they could see the cat was also severely overweight. They named him Bob Marley and put him on a special diet.

The good news? Bob Marley was put up for adoption and found a forever home just a few days later! He’ll never have to worry about being neglected again. ????

As for the unidentified man who dropped the animal off at the shelter overnight, it’s not entirely clear whether he was abandoning his own pet or if he was trying to help an animal in need he may have come across. Either way, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office would like to talk to the man to find out all the information possible about the abandoned cat.
