This sweet dog, named Squirrel, had a loving family. One day, she was hit by a car so her family took her to the vet. Her leg was badly injured but otherwise, she was okay. The medical team set her leg in a cast, but even with the proper intervention, her leg was not healing well. They decided it was best to amputate.
Dogs do very well on three legs. It takes them a bit to get used to it, but once they do, they do awesome! They find their new centre of gravity and then get around perfectly. That’s how it was for Squirrel. Once her leg was amputated, it took a little bit, but she healed and did great.
The only problem was, her family didn’t like the new Squirrel. When they first saw her after her surgery, they said she “grossed them out.” They also claimed that her amputated leg would frighten their kids when in truth, kids adjust really well to things like this. This was a total cop out!
Squirrel loved her family and was really confused by their decision. She doesn’t know she’s any different and hey, isn’t love supposed to be unconditional? Shouldn’t her family accept her no matter what? WE THINK SO TOO!
Now Squirrel is waiting for a new home but maybe she’s better off. I bet she finds a better place to call home. One that truly understands that differences make us who we are and there is nothing wrong with a dog with three legs. The only thing that’s wrong is the people who dare to judge anyone who is different.
The sad thing is, Squirrel is very scared and doesn’t want to be in this place, even though she is well cared for. She needs a new home ASAP!
