Whenever herds of cattle have their horns removed, they are supposed to have pain relief administered in advance of the procedure. Sadly, footage on Israeli television recently showed cattle in excruciating pain having their horns removed, being kicked in the face, and panting after being castrated.
One of the workers on the video is heard saying, “Nobody uses pain killer. Too expensive, too much hassle.”

The horror took place at Australian cattle stations and has caused global outrage.

“This footage is confronting and the community will rightly question how producers can be permitted to operate in this way,” Western Australia (WA) agriculture minister, Alannah MacTiernan, said. “We cannot tolerate inhumane and cruel treatment of animals if we want a strong future for the northern cattle sector.”

WA promises to “fast track” its laws after the footage was released. Animal welfare standards in Australia mandate that pain relief is used when dehorning cattle that are over six months old or 12 months if in rangeland stations. Sadly, the standards have only been enforced in south Australia.
