In our eyes, animal rescuers are superheroes. Most fight the uphill battle knowing it’s a job that pays nothing. Their “paychecks” come in another form. They see animals that are suffering and unwanted, and do everything they can to give them better lives. They’re making a difference. That is their reward.
One beloved animal rescuer, named Litsa, lived in a small town in Central Greece. She made sure all the animals she rescued were placed in loving homes. If they couldn’t be, she kept them herself. Three of the animals lived with her in her home. But Litsa was very poor. She could barely afford the three dogs she took in.
Litsa did what she thought she had to and set up a makeshift animal shelter in an abandoned house nearby. That is where she kept the other thirteen animals. One tragic day, Litsa was brutally murdered by her ex-husband. She left this world with angel wings for all the wonderful things she had done for others.
When DAR Animal Rescue heard about Litsa’s tragic murder, they rushed to her home. She had said to her friends with DAR: “If anything happens to me please take care of my animals.” And they promised they would. They kept that promise.
First, they picked up her pets from her home, then they headed over to the abandoned house. The animals at the abandoned house were depressed. They had been waiting for Litsa. That was their mom! They didn’t know what had happened.
Because the area is so poverty-stricken, the DAR rescuers had nowhere to house all the animals. For now, they would clean up the abandoned home, get the animals proper vet care and keep them company around the clock.
The DAR rescuers worked tirelessly to make space in their shelter for the sixteen dogs and cats. After some time, they were able to move them to their shelter.
While it is still so tragic what happened to Litsa, we are happy that her animals are being well-cared for. They are all healthy and happy but still wait for forever homes.
