A man from Houston, Texas, has died following a hit and run incident that happened in the city’s 8900 block of North Houston Rosslyn Road. The man, identified as 54-year-old Paul Cahill, apparently fell off the sidewalk and came in the way of an oncoming gray Pontiac G8.

Cops investigating the case have revealed that Paul was intoxicated at the time of the accident. He encountered an opossum while walking on the sidewalk and tried to pick it up and get it to safety. However, the startled opossum bit Paul which caused him to lose his balance.
After being struck by the car, Paul was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in a state of emergency. He eventually succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Pontiac was taken in for questioning, but was released later.

This incident has prompted wildlife authorities to remind people that unsupervised interactions with solitary wild animals like opossums can be dangerous. It is never a good idea to confront opossums all of a sudden on a busy road. Let’s be careful and spread the awareness about this basic precaution for pedestrian safety.
