Heartless Owners Trade “Useless” Senior Dogs For Young Puppies In Holiday Season

A dog’s love and loyalty is unconditional. But sadly, many owners only “love” their dogs as long as it’s convenient. A disturbing trend of sick, senior dogs being “traded-in” for younger puppies is on the rise. The Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, recently spoke out against this warped mindset of some pet owners.

Pam Peebles, the executive director of the shelter, explained how many people just don’t want “the hassle” of a senior dog. These heartless owners cannot stand their dog acting “slow” or “lame”, so they surrender the dog in exchange for a cute and frisky new puppy. In most cases, the owners don’t want to bear the expenses of caring for a senior dog.

There is an influx of senior pets in the shelter especially during the holiday season, when people remorselessly replace their old dogs for puppies under the ruse of “gifts”. As a result, many abandoned senior dogs are left heartbroken while they wait for their owners to return for them.

Pam feels that this aversion toward senior pets is unnecessary, as the medical cost related to a senior dog is almost the same as that of a puppy. She hopes that people consider adopting and gifting senior dogs over the holidays, as they still have so much love to give. Let’s raise our voices against this sick trend and help these abandoned senior pups find their forever homes.
