With every fiber of strength she could muster, a dog dragged herself to the doorstep of a woman’s house for help. The dog, a three-year-old Mastiff-Boxer mix named Elise, had been shot with a gun.
Wadena Humane Society’s shelter manager, Becky Costner, says this is a very special case because the dog gets a second chance at life. The bullet grazed Elise’s shoulder and exited through her ear. Sadly, Costner says the shelter sees its fair share of shot animals but very few survive.

“We see more of, ‘If you don’t take this dog, I’ll just take it out back and shoot it. The bullet is cheaper,’” Costner shared.
The shelter started a “Don’t Shoot the Dog” campaign in Wadena, Minnesota several years ago to raise awareness and help people who want to surrender their animal. Costner wants people to view them as a resource so animals can get a forever loving home.

As for Elise, she will spend the night at a local vet, start healing in a foster home, and eventually be up for adoption.
