Nate Ohlman was having an ordinary morning. He’s a hard worker for the post office and realizes that delivering mail in extreme temperatures is a part of his job. On this very cold morning, he was driving on his route when he saw something strange out of the corner of his eye.
An old dog was huddled in a ditch in an attempt to keep warm. Seeing the dog struggling and all on his own shattered his heart. The postal worker knew he had to help him. He walked toward the dog as slowly as possible. He didn’t want to scare him. As he got closer he realized the dog was a senior. Poor dog! It seemed he couldn’t hear or see very well either. Ohlman tried to make loud noises to finally get his attention. Finally, the dog noticed him and ran for his mail truck.

When Ohlman walked to the dog in the truck, he could see he had frostbite. He was also very skinny. The dog, later named Sloan, knew Ohlman was one of the good guys. Dogs just have that sense. He huddled into the nice mailman as Ohlman rushed him to an emergency vet. Ohlman gave the vet staff his phone number when he dropped Sloan off and told them if they needed anything to give him a call. He then went back to work.

Ohlman went back to his route but he couldn’t stop thinking about Sloan. Who could abandon such a sweet dog? Who could leave this sweet helpless boy on his own? It hurt just to think of what Sloan had to endure.
That is when Ohlman made a decision. This dog deserved a good life and there was a reason that they crossed paths. Ohlman was meant to adopt him! Now he had to pray that Sloan would make it. He was in terrible condition so Ohlman decided to pray. He prayed and prayed.
KC Pet Project stepped in when they heard about Sloan. They worked with the medical staff to get him on the right regime so he could go into a foster home that had experience with sick senior dogs. Sloan was estimated to be around 12 years old.

When he first went into foster care, he wasn’t doing well. But everyone that met him knew that Sloan had the will to live. As some time passed, Sloan began to recover. He went from a withdrawn, exhausted and defeated dog to a playful, goofy, happy guy!

The vet cleared Sloan. It was time for him to go to his forever home. The rescue group and the vet staff knew exactly who to call!

Ohlman and Sloan were reunited. Sloan knew exactly who this kind man was and went absolutely crazy when he saw him. He jumped up and kissed Ohlman over and over. He was so excited to see the man who saved his life.

Now they can be together forever!
