A few weeks ago, a graphic viral video had surfaced showing a South Australian cop named Waylon Johncock stoning an innocent wombat to death. The video showed Waylon boastfully hurling heavy rocks on the wombat, while his friend laughed and filmed this savage act. Waylon later gave a celebratory “thumbs-up” for killing a wombat on foot.

In a depressing update to this incident, authorities have confirmed that there will be “no prospect of conviction” for Waylon despite the heavy public outrage. The cop will face zero consequences in law and is free to keep his job without any disciplinary action. He will simply receive “managerial advice and counselling regarding the implications of social media”.
Waylon’s status as an Aboriginal man helped him use the “Native Title Act 1993” as cover. This law permits a traditional Aboriginal man to hunt wombats for food. Disappointed animal activists are now demanding the lawmakers to review the laws that glorify unnecessary cruelty to animals.

“Wombat Awareness Organisation” has launched a petition to demand a special team to enable the change in legislation. Let’s raise our collective voices and demand strengthening of the law that “allows” for this barbarity.
